norma bellini

in this piece of music I watched a clip from Norma Bellini. In this clip the woman is able to project her voice throughout the whole building however due to the camera we are not able to watch the audience reaction however at the end we hear the audience applauding her so we know that they approved. All of the performers are wearing costumes in order to bring the feel to the music so that the audience has a sense of feeling of what's going on during the song. I noticed that she is singing slow as well as on the ground kneeling for most of the song so I'm guessing that this is a sad song. while she is singing all the performers in the background were just standing there watching there not moving as if they were not there. it seems to me that she is just singing one note and does not seem to change it throughout her performance and that she is also singing a duet with another person, he also seems to be singing one note as well. she sings louder than the man and over powers him in the duet.

  1. This was a very interesting selection. I have not seen many recording like this. The balance between the pit orchestra and the singers is very unlike that of say the performance of Barber of Seville or Otello; in which the music was never in the way. At times there is edginess in the woman's voice. Yes it could be due to the fact that its a sorrowful song. I have to agree with your thinking because at the end you see her disappear in a kind of fire-like smoke. When the camera person zooms out she is kneeling in from of what seems like a man with some kind of authority as if being judged or sentenced (to die a firey death maybe?).
